Is there any interest in using PEEK for the extruder thermal barrier?

Is there any interest in using PEEK for the extruder thermal barrier?
November 20, 2009 03:53PM
Hello,

If there is enough interest, I am willing to make a run of PEEK thermal barriers for the extruder. I would have to charge about $12.00 each, plus shipping ($1.50), for them.

Regards,

Brian

Hey Brian,

My team is currently looking at options for our extruder, and this is one we're considering.

Are you planning to make the parts yourself, or are you ordering them from a company?

Also, when would you likely be running them? We're planning to assemble everything in late December (around Christmas). Is it likely that the parts would be ready and shipped by then?

Thanks!

Jacob

Hello,

I have a machine shop and would be running the parts myself. I could have the parts ready for shipping in less than a week (possibly as little as 3 days), depending upon the quantity ordered.

How many PEEK thermal barriers are you interested in?

If you require the heater barrels and nozzles I can supply them, as well. Also, if you want any machined parts to your own, custom, specification, I can probably provide them.

Regards,

Brian

Thanks, that's very generous! How much would you charge for the heater barrels and nozzles?

We'll probably just be looking for one or, at most two extruder barrels - is that a sufficient quantity?

Hello,

Unfortunately, PEEK is very expensive at almost $30.00 per foot. Once s/h is added, it would cost me around $38.00 to get one foot of PEEK. So, in order to cover my costs and machine time, I figure that I would need a minimum order of 8 barrels. If there are 6 others interested, I'll order the stock and make up a batch.

The cost for a PEEK thermal barrier and nozzle would be $19.50. (This price includes shipping to anywhere in the US and Canada.)

Regards,

Brian

This is a great idea, although I don't have a use for one yet.

Will you be open-sourcing the design, or replicating an existing OS design in a new material?

Hello,

The design is at: [reprap.org]

Thanks, this is what I was concerned about.

I hope that there will be enough interest from other members!

Hello,

I believe there is enough interest for me to order a foot of PEEK and make a small batch of thermal insulators. I will order it today.

Brian

The PEEK is ordered and I have placed a for sale notice in the "for sale" section. I will have them available by early next week.

Brian
