Reduce Mendel to 8 Threaded Rod Bars, less scrap!

Figured out how to use 1 less bar in your Mendel Build, and gain 1 extra rod for your next Mendel.

For Mendel you need:
440x2
370x6
294x4
355x2
418x2

Instructions say 9 Bars, but you can do it in 8!

My way of cutting this is
370+294+294
370+294+294
440+440
330+330+294 EXTRA 294 PEICE!
418+418
355+355
370+370
370+370

Should I update the Mendel m4 data sheet?

Should I update the Mendel m4 data sheet?

Please.

Nice bit of work, by the way. (You don't want to see the waste I created when I cut my darwin rods. Blergh.)

I think the spreadsheet is wrong in calling for two copies of D1 and two copies of D2. The mechanical drawing only shows one of each.

As I mentioned in an earlier post you can also get all the threaded pieces, including the three jigs, from eight lengths of 36-inch (914.4 mm) stock. That is useful in the USA where metric stock is less common and more expensive.

1: A+A
2: B+B+J3
3: B+B
4: B+B
5: C+C+J1
6: C+C+J2
7: D1+D2
8: E+E

I see two of each. [objects.reprap.org] shows them most clearly, D1 between the Z Idler and Z motor bracket, and D2 between the two Z Leadscrew bases (or is it the other way around?)

For Mendel you need:
440x2
370x6
294x4
355x2
418x2

Why does this require 9 bars?

Edit: I see it now. There should be an additional 330x2 in the above list. Good work in finding a way to use only 8.

It looks like the rendering in the spreadsheet is not the same as the rendering in the assembly instructions. In the spreadsheet it looks like the Z motor brackets and the Z leadscrew bases are integrated together with a D1 on one side and a D2 on the other. Looks like Mendel is a bit of a moving target at this point.

We need to figure this out, surely someone who has put one together can just count the pieces! I don't want to update the Data sheet until we know which is which.

Yeah, my printed Mendel uses the two extra M8 rods on the Z axis. I would guess that the Z bearing plates were split to fit on the Makerbot build area; thus the two extra rods. Easier to avoid warping problems too.

I used Triffid_Hunter's 8 Threaded Rod method today here is a picture of the result. Thank you for Posting Triffid_Hunter.

2 294 355 330 21
1 294 294 370 42
