Huge Cracking with single wall ABS Vase

Hi,

I need to know, is it possible to print a single-walled vase (using vase option in Slic3r) in ABS? I've tried with fan cooling turned on and off, with 220C through to 245C but still get cracking
on a large number of heights all around the print. I've also tried printing at 0.1mm layer height, and at 0.2mm layer height with 0.35mm extrusion width to match my nozzle. Please help!

Thanks in advance,

Sam

This is a typical problem printing tall objects with ABS. A heated cabinet will help. Cooling should be turned off.

Your nozzle diameter is partly to blame. 0.5mm works much better at printing single walled objects, simply because there is more plastic there. However...

Not all filament is created equal. Here is a quick test you can perform to determine if your filament (ABS) is more or less prone to severe delamination, and warping.

Cut a piece of filament 50mm long, hold it between your thumb and pointer fingers, and start compressing it slowly until it either snaps, or comes together at the ends. The more brittle ABS filaments will snap right away. The ones that don't break will have the more elastic qualities needed to print single walled items with little or no cracking. This can vary vendor to vendor, color to color, and batch to batch, but you will get the feel for it once you've worked through a few spools.

One of these days, I'll get around to developing some of my tests further.
