So my hobbed bolt is worn down and causing me problems. I am wondering, is there something better to use?

Ive heard spur gears (I think that's what they are called) perform better.

I don't know that a spur gear would be better. A hobbed bolt made from a harder stainless alloy would be better if you're concerned about wear.

I'm using the "original" kossel-extruder with a normal gear (i.e. no spur, just teeth ;-)).
It's holding so tight that the geared motor is loosing steps rather than letting the filament slip. Only problem is to get a fitting gear here in europe ...
