"mendell" mcmaster carr part/order list (US) - simply paste into website

After pulling my hair out for a couple of hours trying to figure out the preposterously and unnecessarily complex BOM spreadsheet, I created this cut and paste list for the mcmaster carr website, you can just drop it in on the order page by selecting the "paste order" link at the bottom.

NOTE: I have not tested out this list yet but best I can tell it matches the BOM, any feedback is greatly appreciated and I will update it. You still need the stepper motors (good luck, they seem to be almost globally sold out, I believe the 0.9 degree is needed which is much rarer then the 1.8 degree, any one know?) and the small 624ZZ bearings (mcmaster has high end ones for 6.54 each, you can probably find cheapees for 0.75-1.00 at thebearingstore.com). This covers the items previously listed from ace hardware and smallparts.com, it seemed a lot easier to just place one order to me.

Paste list:

It works! Go to "Current Order". If you get separate boxes for Quantity and Item click on the "Paste items and quantities" link to get a "Paste in items and quantities to add them to your order" text box. Paste in the list and click the ADD button.

Merchandise total $247.54

The order system points gives some warnings:

"Lines 1, 2, and 3 are duplicates" I wonder if there is a way to get all six bars out of two 1200 mm pieces of stock. That would save $32. Too bad 475+406+330=1211 and the stock is only 1200mm. Are the lengths critical enough that they wouldn't work if 4 or 5 mm shorter?

"Lines 5 and 6 are duplicates" Does the Mendel really use TWO 8-foot lengths of toothed belt in addition to the 37" continuous belt?

On the duplicate items those are not errors and were based on the BOM, I haven't finished building so I not sure if there is a cheaper way to order.

The X-belt (1300mm) and Y-belt (810mm) together come to a hair less than 7 feet. One 8-foot length should be more than enough.
...So how exactly does this satisfy the Studding needs for the Mendel? According to the spreadsheet you need 9 one meter lengths.. there are only 2 two meter lengths on this order.. Am I missing something?

That list does not include items for the extruder. I just ordered some extruder parts, so I would recommend adding:

1 Roll 7648A713
1 Roll 7648A715
1 Ft. 8546K14
10 Ft. 3870K32
1 Each 8880K82

details
Heat Resistant Kapton Tape W/Silicone Adhesive, 1/2" W, 5 Yards, .0025" Thk
Heat Resistant Kapton Tape W/Silicone Adhesive, 1" W, 5 Yards, .0025" Thk
PTFE Rod 5/8" Diameter
Solid Thermocouple Wire FEP Insulation, Type K, 24 Gauge
Nickel Chromium Wire .0100" Diameter, 1/8-lb Spool, 403' Spool

EDIT: Why use UNinsulated nichrome wire? How do you make an extruder nozzle with uninsulated nichrome wire?

McMasters only sells uninsulated nichrome wire. If you want insulated nichrome wire, it is sold by Makerbot.com at $5 for 5 feet, or Pelicanwire, which I think has a minimum order of $100. If you intend to make only one extruder and not use nichrome wire for a heated bed, the Makerbot deal is good, but if you need more than 5 feet, bare wire is cheaper. To make up for the wire not being insulated, wrap a layer of Kapton tape around the brass/copper nozzle. Temporarily tape down one end of the wire then coil the rest over the Kapton and secure with a second layer of Kapton. Bring the loose end back over the back of the coil and secure with a 3rd layer. Then add the thernalcouple and secure with a 4th layer of Kapton.

you may still need extra threaded rod/studding, fasteners, and a few other parts. My work won't allow the full parts list to display.

Mike
P.S. I think that a short length of stainless steel tubing from a recycling yard would work better than the copper tubing for covering the hot section of the extruder. It should suck away less heat.

BTW, you can put the details behind the part number, and it will still paste in fine:

1 90576A102 mcmaster.com, m3-nylock.par 100 pack
2 91166A210 mcmaster.com, m3-washer.par 100 pack
1 90591A141 mcmaster.com, m4-nut.par 100 pack
2 90576A103 mcmaster.com, m4-nylock.par 100 pack

...

no need to use "#" or anything, everything past the part number is ignored.

This week I placed an order at McMaster for some parts for another project and, as a test, I ordered some alternatives to the bar and threaded rod parts.

I received the stuff today. I will check the straightness tomorrow. So far though they look good.

The parts I ordered and am testing are:

93000A516 - M8 threaded rod, steel, Zinc planted $7.95 each
98861A080 - M8 threaded rod, steel, $2.27 each
8888K41 - 5/16" bar, 3 feet length, A2 tool steel, $8.37 each

On the last item I am evaluating to see if the 5/16" bar works as a substitute for the 8mm stuff. Its pretty close.

Oh, and I went with the 1-meter and 3 foot pieces because I didn't want a 7 foot tube sitting on my porch when UPS came to deliver it.

I realize the bar is not specced as a precision shaft and doesn't have straightness spec but I went back through the UK suppliers on the recommended parts list and I noticed that they don't use precision linear shafts either.

If it doesn't work out its not a big deal. I always need raw materials for projects.

0.0625 inch smaller than 8 mm

0.0625 inch = 1.5875 millimeters

The substitute is not hardened, in fact it says it's annealed. I don't know if that will make a difference in the long run with bearings, but it should start out OK. I'd worry about the extra play.

Actually, it is

0.0625 mm smaller than 8 mm

0.0625 mm = 0.00246 inches, which is less than 1/32 inch

They are close enough that it doesn't matter. This isn't true of the threaded rod, which has a different pitch.

Yeah, if I went with 5/16" threaded rod I would have to replace all other parts with threads and I am not interested in doing anything like that. I just liked the price/options on the 5/16" smooth rod so I thought I would give it a try.

@pica your point about not being hardened is very true. I guess my thinking was that I went back to the original assembly data sheet and followed the links to the suggested UK suppliers and found, unless I am reading it wrong, that they are not hardened either.

This is what the 'official' recommendations are:
threaded rod: Threaded rod
smooth rod: Smooth rod

I could be far off but, if I am reading those sites correctly, they are using pretty average stuff.

I don't know though. I am pretty new to building this kind of thing so its totally possible I am not reading that correctly.

mccoyn Thanks for checking my math. I see size is not an issue.

krafter Agree , "Bright mild steel rod" seems very close to the "drill rod" you found at mcmaster-carr. I'll probably go that route when I try for a mini-mendel inspired repstrap. Quite a cost savings. I was thinking of cutting a part of an automobile shock (stainless steel, hardened, ground smooth) to use for the z-axis, but I don't think now that the extra effort will pay.

On the threaded rod (used for framework), I think all you need to do is match closely the "major diameter" to what is specified. you may have to adjust the nuts and (slim chance) the washers. (again, for the frame) I'd wager that you could likely drill out many of the structural parts slightly larger if needed (mindful that the printed parts may not have 100% fill)

The only part of the threaded rod I'd guess would be critical would be for the z-axis, as I assume that the rods would need to fit into the 2 odd bearings and also take the belt gears too.

Just an FYI, the difference OD between 8mm and 5/16 inch is actually 0.0625 mm, not inches. It is 0.00246 inches smaller, or about 2 1/2 thousands of an inch. To keep perspective, a piece of paper is about 5 thousands thick.

I am making my Mendel out of 5/16 threaded rod (except the z axis, which I made out of 8mm for the thread pitch). If you order from Mcmaster, you can get 2 foot, 3 foot and 6 foot lengths. with careful management (and skipping the jig pieces, since they can be made of anything) you can cut the allthreads and have less than a foot of wasted material. I have the layout I used at work, I will post it if anyone is interested.

I am also using 5/16 smooth centerless rod, found someone selling stainless polished rod of that size for a song, bought all they had. I am building my Mendel with the original design, then building another one with a new design I am working on using linear bearings instead of roller bearings, and an acme type nut and drive rod instead of belts. Thankfully I have a friend with a cupcake, he made most of the RP parts for me

OK, I just went back to my materials list, and I agree with Ard, back on the 16th of march. there should be the following lengths

2 lengths 440 which is 880mm
6 lengths 370 which is 2220mm
4 lengths 294 which is 1176mm
2 lengths 335 which is 710mm
2 lengths 418 which is 836mm
2 lengths 330 which is 660mm
for a total of 6482 mm or 6 1/2 Meters _____ _______

So no way to get that with 2 2 meter lengths.

The way I worked it out was shifting to 5/16th shaft, nuts, washers, except for the Z drive axis. (just to keep the per-turn advance the same with pitch changes)

I did it with 2 6 foot,(98920A030, $7.14 each)
2 3 foot (98847A030, $3.57 each)
and 1 2 foot(98804A030 $2.38 each)
of 5/16th, and 1 1 meter shaft of 8mm 9(0024A080, $8.31 each)
a total of $32.11

These are all stainless threaded rod

In inches, the lengths worked out to be

stud
6 ft 14.57in 14.57in 14.57in 13.98in 11.57in 2.72 scrap
6 ft 14.57in 14.57in 14.57in 13.98in 11.57in 2.72 scrap
3 ft 16.46in 17.32in 2.20 scrap
3 ft 17.32in 16.46in 2.20 scrap
2 ft 11.57in 11.57in 0.83 scrap

1000 mm 330mm 330mm

total 5/16" scrap was less than 10 inches

that actually gives 1 extra length of 340+ mm of 8mm shaft, for a spare, or to sell to another builder.

I believe that the 5/16 nuts are also cheaper than their 8mm counterpart, and a local Ace Hardware supplied me with the few 8mm nuts I needed for the Z axis

Do do get these mudguards from McMaster! They are 22mm outside diameter and do not fit next to each other in the row of 4 bearings on the Mendel X Axis (Motor Bracket).

Instead you can get washers with 3/16"ID and 3/4"OD (~4.7mm ID ~19mm OD)

Anyone have an updated version of the paste-in part list? I'm trying to piece together all the suggested modifications and I have to say it's a bit confusing.
Re: "mendell" mcmaster carr part/order list (US) - simply paste into website
April 16, 2010 09:19PM
Well - here is a list. I cannot guarantee this is 100% accurate as I went with some different suppliers for some stuff and got other things locally, and haven't built my Mendel yet either. So please triple check it against the BOM before you click the buy button.

Up front let me say : I spent a lot of time running numbers on the hardware parts, and there are people selling kits that have very competitive prices for what you pay if you buy piecemeal. Especially since they have the rods already cut to length. I don't sell these kits, nor do I have any interest in doing so, it's just an honest observation. I really don't know how they're making money to be honest.

I believe I substituted all the changes listed above, plus a few more of my own -- for example this item in the original list :

95263A273 = 50 pack Metric Class 12.9 Socket Head Cap Screw Znc-Coated Alloy Stl, M4 Thrd, 16mm L, .7mm Pitch
$6.37

compared to this item in my list :
91292A118 = 100 pack of Metric 18-8 SS Socket Head Cap Screw M4 Thread, 16mm Length, 0.7mm Pitch
$4.93

Well, grade 12.9 definitely is mega-overkill for holding together plastic, so save a couple bucks and get twice the # of screws too. I would imagine there's room to tweak this list even more if you dig.

All fasteners are boxes of 100. There will be leftovers. If you can find singles for sale locally, you can save a few bucks. Biggest saving would be the M3x25 (you only need 4) and M4x20 (you only need 1), as it cost $11.60 from McMaster for 100 of each. Check also for M8 nuts - need 104 total, M4x40 - need 115 total, you may find you can get the extras for less than a 100 pack. I think everything else would be a difference of a few dollars at most.
