virtural 3d testing of the Mendel

Just wondering, Do you think we could make a 3d working model of Mendel virtural that would work just like the real thing? I was thinking we could use something like Autodesk Inventor, but open source and free like FreeCAD . I think this would speed up develoment of Mendel.

if some one could convert stl files into .sat or basicaly any other format i could assemble the parts in inventor. any one can get inventor for FREE and LEGAL thru students.autodesk.com so its a good piece of software because its easy to get

There is a step file somewhere in subversion that loads into Inventor.
