E3D Full metal hotend Thermistor Problems
March 24, 2014 06:46AM
Hello,

I have recently purchased an e3d full metal hotend.

It works really well, but the thermistor never fixes on the hotend.

I try really hard to stick it with kapton tape and it looks just fine.

But, Once the hotend is heated, the kapton tape comes off, and the thermistor detaches itself from the hotend, spoiling my entire print.

Anyone has a solution to this ?

Please Help !

Thanks

Hey

Thanks for your quick reply.

I wrap it around 3 or 4 times.

I will try wrapping it around like you and check.

Thanks.

Hello,

Disasters happening to me :-(

I just broke my thermistor .

Can we use a normal 100K thermistor with the metal hotend ?

Or do we need to use only a glass bead thermistor ?

Please Help

I wrapped mine with this:

The additonal insulation also gives lower hysterisis in temperature control from my observation.
For a replacement thermistor you'll need to check that it fits in the hole and that it is rated to 250C.

Now would be a good time to switch over to a thermocouple sensor.

I drilled a tiny hole and tapped it (2-26) at right angle to thermistor hole
and put a screw in it to anchor the thermistor
Don't crush the thermistor -- just tight enough to keep it in place!!!

I used this approach for mounting the thermistor in my E3D, it's been bullet proof.....perhaps you want to give it a try.

Basically I tapped an existing hole with a 3mm tap and screwed in the assembly.....it works perfect.
The other thing I did was insulate the hot-end with Kapton covered insulation. I laser cut the holes but I am sure the same thing can be accomplished with a simple hole punch.

I purchased the thermistor assembly from Ebay (see link below) but it looks like it could be reproduced quite easily with some old PC mounting hardware.

I only have one wrap of kapton tape holding my thermistor in. The insulated wires are firmly fastened to the moving effector plate, and the wire loop down to the hot end has just enough spring pressure where it pushes the thermistor into the hole. Next time that I have the effector plate apart, I intend to glue the thermistor into the hot end with some high-temperature RTV gasket compound that I picked up at the local auto parts store.....

Hello,

Have you tried the RTV Gasket Yet ?

How were the results ?

RTV Gaskets are generally sealants, Will they work to stick the thermistor ?

Thanks
