And by "(relatively) affordable" they mean $15,000. grinning smiley

The desktop units are to be made by Stratasys.

The picture used to illustrate the article appears to be of a RapMan (RepRap Darwin variant made of laser-cut acrylic).

And the text is about makerbot. confused smiley

Makerbot is really good at media stuff and making sexy and functional websites.

Once the RepRap website is functional, I'm going to work on 'the sexy' and then maybe the media stuff.

We'll discuss that over here.

Does anyone have some pretty pictures of Mendel, maybe with colored acrylic sides bolted on, or blue LEDs? smiling smiley Or with a cat?

Gizmodo also picked up the HP/Stratasys/$15,000 3D printer story:

(They use the same RapMan picture.)

Right.

Time to order Adrian a few blue LEDs, and get him a twitter feed or a cat. ... My cat has always wanted a "twitter" feed. smiling smiley

Yep I was in one of HP's first focus groups about it almost 3 years ago now. They were trying to nail down exactly what 3D printing technology was the most user friendly and the most accepted. I thought for sure they were going to go the route of Objet technology that uses a printer head technology and a photo-polymer. But they partnered with Stratasys. I was wondering if they were going anywhere with the info they collected in the focus groups.

Any idea how much they hope to charge for refill printer cartridges?

I assuuuume they're hoping to make lots of money that way. winking smiley

HP's old business laser printers are built like tanks. I wonder if RepRap.org will host 3D models for replacement parts for HP's new printers, when stuff breaks.

Or maybe they're not going to GPL theirs.grinning smiley

More expensive yes

"But you do get 34 pages more using an original cartridge"

Now that will be interesting what will the add say for 3D cartridges?

"You can print 4 more plastic Euros" or "20 more handcuff keys"
