3 axis non planar toolpaths FDM printing, patent pending

I would think that this has been done before.
Maybe some one with the right skills can figure out a workaround.

It's another slicing program right? One that implements the "bed leveling technique" in the actual printing g-code?
Time to get it built into Slic3r!

could do it as a post processor, then you could use not only with slic3r but cura and other slicer programs, as well as being usefull for certain cnc applications

This is interesting...

its taken slicing from the 2d layer by layer to the 3d so that a curved surface can be printed as one layer over variable Z heights

Not sure how useful it is, but it is certainly interesting.

It's the quality of finish I found appealing although it's not relevant on flat surfaces.
Isn't Slic3r's "vase" option doing the same thing but only in the up direction?

I don't think so. Slic3rs vase option makes one continuous line that builds the vase. This looks like it makes individual layer but they use x y and z instead of just x and y. So it essentially makes a smooth 3 dimensional surface.

Would be very limited by nozzle/heater block clearances.

Cura already has a plugin that prints in three dimensions [www.thingiverse.com]

This is true for a machine with 3 axis motion, but a machine with higher degrees of freedom would not be as limited. Might be interesting to try this with Sextupteron or a printer based on a Stewart-Gough platform like this one.

This would be an amazing feature if the user could specify it for specific surfaces. No need to use it everywhere.

I highly doubt that 5-6 axis 3d printers will ever take off. The advantages are far too small compared to the complexity and expense added.

How about adding a inkjet printhead? This will make full color 3d printing possible.
