Very impressed with Slic3r 1.1.2 support material

Did my 1st print that required quite a lot of support - Lots of overhangs. I installed the latest slic3r as it claims to have better support material management. It certainly does.

I set it at 5mm pattern spacing, with rectilinear pattern.

The support material snapped off with no effort and left no mess behind.

I was also surprised that Slic3r 1.1.2 didn't put any support material in the centre of the "thing" - which is totally hollow, and the printer coped perfectly. The entire "top plate" before the angled top piece was printed in thin air! In the slic3er update notes they mentioned that they have tweaked the support routine to make bridges where it thinks it's possible rather than adding support. In earlier versions it fills the hollow with support material.

I was really amazed how easily it all came off. Very impressed.

Good mention, thanks, I'll update it immediately to try and print that one piece that I didn't manage to print last month because the support structures were messing up the print too much smiling smiley (I designed some cutlery)

:-) Good luck.

I found previewing the layer by layer construction on Pronterface enables you to see how slic3r has decided to create the support material before you print (I print direct from SD so don't usually use pronterface but it's a great preview tool too)

May I ask what your support settings were?

Thanks
