Now there's an idea:

Quote

We may not have to imagine much longer, what it would be like to bite into a 3D printed pear, apple or plum. That’s because a Cambridge, England company, founded just three years ago, called Dovetailed, has been working 3D print ‘fruit’. They have been able to accomplish this by using a technology which has been around for years, called spherification.

3D-printing is overrated.

^ Much agreed. It's awesome and all. Yeah, it'll change how things are done. But after getting into the 3D printing world I've realized that it isn't infinite, nor is it going to be a replacement for all manufacturing.

It won't replace all manufacturng yet. As a technology, it's still in it's early stages, give it 20 years and see where it is then.

I'm not sure if its going to be 20. The big thing I think will be 3+ materials.

I'm pretty sure inside 20 years we'll be closer to home SLS printers as cheaper, higher wattage lasers become readily available.

I just love to eat a banana that grew from a tree. To peel off it's skin, and every banana is different. I mean, why mimic stuff thats already here?

They are now growing 3D-printed ears, okay, I think that's awesome, to give someone their ear back after losing it! Wow, how good someone will feel when looking a bit more complete again! Thats great.

What if you have a space constraint, like in a spacecraft, or moon/mars colony? Besides, you never know where this technology could take us. It lead to nothing at all, but it may lead to Star Trek like food replicators.
