I was looking at some pages and found this idea for a really simple timing belt tensioner. This might be of some use.

DOH! Why haven't I ever thought of doing that???
Beats the heck out of the tension spring loaded idler pulley design
that I typically use. And I'm going to try it tonight on a design I've
been working on.

That would also work well with the steel wire cable I was thinking of using for a new McWire design I am trying to call Mike Wire. I had already though of using a tension spring to close the loop in the drive cable. This would take up less room that could not go around any pulleys. Speaking of which, where did you find the plastic pulley you are using there? And what of the drive pulley attached to the stepper motor? Did you tear apart an old inkjet printer?

That bit of metal wire looks a hell of a lot like the middle of my clothes pegs that I use to dry my clothes with. I wonder if it could be adapted?

Actually I am not the one who came up with that idea. I was just surfing the internet and looking for robotic stuff and found that. I thought it was a great idea and could help some other people out. I do really think its part of a close-pin as well.

I dismantled an old flatbed scanner to salvage the stepper motor. The drive belt was tensioned the same way.
I believe this is standard in inkjet printers and flatbed scanners.
A clothespin spring might be a to hard for this purpose.

The spring shown is the standard used in every flat bed scaner I have seen so far.

Another neat tensioner Idea used in inkjet printers looks a bit like a lollypop on a spring or bike front fork with suspension.

The round parts a pully on a stick, a spring is on the stick thats mounted through a U bracket thus providing a compresion belt tensioner.

If you can buy or scavenge some wooden clothes pegs, they use these springs. Failing that, the google product search linked above lists a couple of suppliers.

Thank you guys..... You've given me a really good idea....
The problem is I'm in Wales, and they get thier pegs from Gypsies around here....
(No springs)
