New style of 3D printer

Saw this really smart 3D printer build on Make's website today -- although they haven't launched yet (co-created by the team that made Grbl).

[makezine.com]

It seems to be an extremely simple (too simple almost) and cost-effective alternative to the Cartesian-linear configuration, although it might add some software complexity, but nothing extraordinary.

Are there any weaknesses to this particular kind of setup -- why hasn't it been explored more often?

Indeed old idea, I like how he just attached the motors next to eachother basically.

The direct-drive mechanism used (ie, no gearing or reduction of any sort) probably won't work very well as it won't have enough resolution for accurate prints. It also looks like you have deal with a kinematic singularity right in the middle of the workspace.
