In the US, the most common threaded rod is 1/4 inch, what is the most common size in the metric system?

I don't think there is one. I can go into a high street DIY store and get BZP M3,M4,M5,M6 and M8 no problem. They are usually bent though. It is cheaper and better quality to get them mail order, next day delivery, from Farnell.

Check the bom, the cheapest I found in the UK was Orbital Fasteners

Quarter inch threaded rod is 6.35 mm. M6 is about as close as you get to that.

The point of the question is I am making a metric version of the 22 sided rod connector I use for rapid prototyping around the house. I use 1/4 because it's the cheapest here, wanted to find out the cheapest in Europe.

Obviously M6 is cheaper than M8, simply due to there being much less material, the question is what is the smallest size you need?

1/4 is easyier, and usually cheaper in the us than 1/8, 1/16 is quite hard to get at all. I don't think they even make 1/32.

So from your responces I guess 4 is common, is 2 equally common? How about 3?

Unified Thread Standard in the US doesn't use inch ratings below 1/4 inch. 1/8th inch is a #5 threaded rod. You can get #4 fairly regularly in the better hardware stores, though in my experience it is usually bent all to hell.
