Can I make coloured objects with RepRap?
May 26, 2010 07:12AM
Hi

I'm working on something for which I need to be able to make different coloured objects [without painting them] and am looking at the capabilities of different fabbers.

From what I have read / watched so far I like the whole RepRap project but I get the impression fab@home allows the use of more materials. Would there be some way of colouring the polylactic acid? Or is it possible to use other materials with it?

Any advice would be very welcome
Thanks in advance

Ultimachine sells a lot of different colors of PLA.
And I believe somewhere it was possible to custom order PLA in any color if the order was big enough, can't remember who the supplier was though.
Makerbot sells a lot of different colors of ABS, which is also usable by Mendel.

You can use anything with RepRap, you just need the proper extruder for each material, which you might have to design, adapt and/or build yourself at the moment winking smiley

Great, thanks

To clarify, most RepRaps can only print one colour at a time although that can be any colour of plastic that you feed into the machine. There are a few experimental multi-print-head RepRaps that might be able to do multiple colours in a single print. But this is rare.

Ok, thanks. One colour at a time is fine for my purposes actually. Multi-colour would be very interesting though...
