Filament Advice Please
February 17, 2015 07:48AM
Hello

So my Prusa i3 kit arrived today (a week before expected) and I need some filament.
I believe it uses 1.7mm PLA or ABS but from what I have read PLA seems to be the starters choice.
I have also read that print quality seems to very much dependent on filament quality.
So I need some buying advice please, where to shop and what to buy, also what to watch out for as not what it says on the box.

Many thanks in advance imk

If you have a heated bed and print in a non drafty environment, use ABS. If you do not have a heated bed, then ABS is a tricky filament to print in. PLA doesnt NEED a heated bed, but it can help. PLA is more brittle and is generally more expensive/harder to manufacture consistantly. I am printing ABS on a homemade heated bed, you just need to lay down some gluestick on the bed. I am very impressed with repraper's amazon page. 2.2lb of black ABS for 22 bucks and the consistency was great. If you use PLA, I wasnt real impressed with filamex, but it worked as a good cheap first spool to get everything working and calibrated. ABS is much better for printed upgrades, as it softens at a much higher temp than PLA. hope this helps!
