Open source question about Printrbot
April 10, 2015 09:25PM
Please forgive me if this is an ignorant question, but I can't seem to find a past topic that addresses this question fully:

As a happy owner of a Printrbot Simple Metal, could anyone enlighten me as to whether the RepRap community considers their designs to be truly open source? I know that Printrbot makes a number of their CAD files for their electronics available under CC-NC-SA. I have also seen opinions stating that you can't truly call your design open source if you release under a non-commercial license. I know that the case is less clear-cut than say that of Makerbot, but I was just wondering what the general consensus is, as this is an ethical issue I care about despite how much I love my Printrbot (for the same reasons that the Tiko turns me off despite how intriguing it is to me as someone in the field of education who welcomes the advent of so called "easy to use" 3D printers).
