Time lapse video
May 22, 2015 11:08AM
I have seen a few time lapse videos of 3d prints and I think they look quite good and would like to have a go.

I see some are using a rasbery pi, but I would rather use something not so dedicated and would like to use it for other videos as well so looking for something self contained.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Dave

If you have a Canon camera, you can install CHDK and use the time-lapse routine that comes with CHDK. It will takes a series of still images at specified interval. You then use software like Photolapse or VirtualDub to create a mpg file from the jpg stills.

That's how I made this video: Koch Snowflake Vase

For my RC-Octocopter I use a mobius "Action Cam" that also does timelapse.

But I thought, it would be usefull to have the printer trigger the camera, every x slices. Or y-times per slice.
I would use a camshaft-like gear on the z-rod to manually trigger a mechanical or optical switch.

But I have so much stuff on my todo list, It will take a while to work the timelaps-trigger wheel out.
Maybe someone else had already done that?

I saw something where someone added custom gcode for each layer to toggle an output on the controller board- easy to do in slic3r. That output was used to drive a camera shutter so it took a picture at the start or end of every layer. The video just looked like the machine moved in the Z axis only and the print just magically grew out of the bed, always attached to the extruder nozzle.

I use framelapse app on my cell phone and they come out great.
I just had to 3d print a phone mount and away I went.

Just found that in Marlin

// M240  Triggers a camera by emulating a Canon RC-1 Remote
// Data from: [www.doc-diy.net]
// #define PHOTOGRAPH_PIN     23
