When I home my printer how far should the tip of the nozzle be from the glass? Should it be touching or should it be more?

Approximately the thickness of a sheet of paper.

That depends on the size of the paper!

General distance is that if a piece of paper is very lightly ripped between the bed and nozzle then thats the correct distance.

It should be touching, or on the verge of touching. But most people use the "when it starts to grip a sheet of paper" method. There is enough elasticity in the mechanics that it amounts it more or less the same thing.

When the actual print starts, the gcode does not put the head at Z=0, it puts the head at Z=first layer height.

I use a metal feeler gauge no vauge guessing or ripped bits of paper.
A couple of quid on ebay or from you local car parts/tool shop.
Once you get the feel of the resistance between the bed and nozzle you can repeat it accurately.
And always do it at the full ptinting temp for the bed and nozzle.

With abs, pla, nylon and nijaflex.
For my 0.5mm nozzle i use the 0.1mm blade.
For my 0.3mm nozzle i use the 0.08mm blade.

I use kapton tape on the bed, except with ninjaflex and i have no adhesion problems or first layer issues.
