[Solved] Printing flexible filament with E3D Chimera
June 21, 2015 01:42PM
Hello Guys!

So i got this new E3D Chimera, and it's wonderful!

However i want to try and print flexible filaments. My current setup is a bowden setup. When i try to print Flexible filaments, the filaments gets "stuck" on the inside of the bowden tube (i think) and therefore cannot extrude.

Has anyone experienced the same issue and maybe come up with a solution? Perhabs a direct drive extruder for the chimera Hot end?

Flexible filament with a bowden setup seems to be difficult, from what I read.
Would you try a flex3drive setup? They might have a adaption for the chimera.

I have no trouble with flex filament in my bowden. I not using the super rubber ninjaflex stuff but I think the only issue is the unguided space behind the drive gear. If you design your extruder in a way that the bowden tube almost touches the driver gear I dont see an issue. Im also printing with the same retraction setting and havent noticed much worse quality.

Thank you for your reply sungod3k.

I am having an issue where it seems that the filament gets stuck in the PTFE tubing. Have you experienced this?

It is more likely that the filament bends in some place where it is not constrained enough. I had this problem too and I re-designed my extruder so that the filament is never free, from the hobbed bolt to the nozzle.
