Strange Y axis motor problems

Hi Guys,

First time poster long time lurker (Always wanted to say that)

So I have been lent a Pursa I3 from a friend, It was in mostly working order when I got it, I had to fix the z end stop and a few other minor things.

So when I finally had it up and running, all the axis where moving as expected, untill I tipped it on its side to tighten the belt and adjust some things.
Thats when the madness started......

So now what happens - only to the Y-Axis. Is when you attempt to move it in manual mode in repetier host, the motor sounds like it is grinding and the bed jumps/shakes back and forward, it might move a cm if you are lucky but mainly just sounds nasty and vibrates.

The super strange thing is when you have all power disconnected (PSU and USB cable to arduino) and turn the cog manually the motor grinds when it is plugged into the arduino shield, in the y spot. But if you plug it into say the x or z it moves fine with no grinding, when tested in manual mode in repetier, I can get the y axis to move but only if it is plugged into the z or x slot.

Things I have tried to fix this:
-plugged motor into different driver/spot into the shield (X and Z)
-swapped around drivers, there is no difference no matter the driver.
-new wiring from shield/driver to motor
-test voltage on drivers, they are all set the same, tried tuning Y up and down no difference.
-removing the belt and checking for rubbing/vibration all moves smooth as, it is only when plugged into the shield that I get issues.

The drivers are these things G3D driver

Has anyone experienced something like this before? I have run out of ideas and things to google to try and fix this, friend has no idea either, he suggested asking you folk.

Cheers.

Sounds like a bad driver to me.

That 'grinding' is a short in the driver - you will get the same results if you jumper the coils of your stepper.

Hopefully you have stepstick on your electronics - they are cheap easy to replace (about $10-$15 USD)

They are also prone to die if you power on while your steppers are partially disconnected (they try to drive constant current, and a 'open' coil while the other is closed will cause some models to go nuts and kill themselves).

Thanks for the responses guys,

I will pick up some more drivers (or ask my friend if he has spares), I have tried swapping around the 4 that I have, it did not make a difference.

If swapping your drivers didn't make a difference, get out your multimeter and check that you don't have a short in your stepper cables.

Ok cool, will do that when I get home. thanks for the information Ezrec. Was getting very frustrated, you have given me hope.

After rewiring the stepper motor, getting angry and then buying a new set of electronics.

I'm happy to let everyone who may be experiencing something similar that it was the ramps 1.4 shield that was bad.
