Sprayable filler?

Sprayable filler?

Hi,

Im onto model finishing again and a friend of mine mentioned sprayable filler that should be thick enough to fill in layergaps and act as primer. I searched a bit around but couldnt pinpoint a brand or product. Most of the stuff is primer or paste car body filler but no sprayable fillers. Does anyone have an idea or a product that could be used like that?

Cheers

Filler Primer - ask at any automotive store or use those words as the search term on ebay.

If you are in the U.S. there is a product called "Dupli-Color Filler Primer" that I use a lot. It will fill in about 70% of the print lines. If you want to go further than that I suggest you coat the part with spot putty and sand it first then use the filler primer. Both of these are available from automotive parts stores.

Or apply a couple of coats?

It does not get much better after 2 coast (my normal application) much more than that and you start to loose definition in the model.

Here is a photo of 2 trek communicators, one was a single coat of primer sealer, the other was coated with spot putty, sanded smooth then sprayed with primer sealer. (and of course painted).

That 2nd one is pretty indeed. I found the dupli stuff on german amazon as well. Ill give it a try.

The paste filler method is definitely doable it would just be awesome to have a more universally applicable method. I also saw on a recent maker faire a guy who used a tumble sander with wallnut shells in it. Not useful for fine detail but his superhero figurines came our looking nicely. That plus filler primer could work out well I imagine.

I've also used a vibratory tumbler. It's descent though I used small plastic pyramid abrasives and they work pretty well, it came with walnut shell as well but I read somewhere that the small triangles were better for getting into small areas. It does take a very long time though I put several pieces in and started off at a few hour with very little difference. In the end 48 hours was needed to see a marked improvement. Not sure why I did not continue use other than time it's pretty good. This is the stuff I used in my tumbler [www.harborfreight.com]

I agree on both counts.

tmorris9 - i think they both look good. Maybe doing the tumbler before the filler primer might be worth a try since you increase the preparation of the foundation surface.

That could be true. I might have to get back into trying the tumbler.

There is also another trend of painting thick epoxy onto the surface with a paint brush, supposedly it's fairly easy and self leveling. I have not tried this which is odd since I sell epoxy for a living, I think I just have an aversion to using it since it's a job to me. Here is a link to one company if you want to explore this method [www.smooth-on.com]
