Paper Printer

Hello,

i was looking around for ideas for 3D printers. While doing so, I found mcor technologies who make 3D printers that use paper in order to create 3D objects. [mcortechnologies.com]

I think the idea is pretty cool especially because you can use a lot of colors. But they don't tell you the price, so i am assuming that they are very expensive.

Because they are so expensive i wanted to ask you what you think about the paper concept or if you know someone who uses something like that? Do you have any experience with these printers or something similar or working with paper at all?

I like the idea of using it to create fully colored models, but i am not sure if it is better than color 3D printers that use PLA or something similar. I'm very curious about your answers.

Kind regards
VDX

... this sort of stacking paper sheets is the old LOM concept (Laminated Object Modelling), what was pretty common between 1988 and 1994 when the user interset switched to SLA printing and most companies building/selling LOM printers vanished from the market eye rolling smiley

My first 'Additive Manufacturing' system at home was a XY-plotter armed with a CO2-laser, cutting paper, plastic and leather sheets - tested with stacking/laminating the sheets too, but most 3D-parts for my projects were milled, so more focussed on stacking milled metal sheets ...

Thank you for your insight, but did you like the look and feel of the 3D - parts? I liked building stuff out of paper when i was a kid (planes, castles, ...). That is why i like this LOM style of printing with paper. But there has to be a reason why they all vanished. Do you know why? Is the quality that much worse?

... no, the quality and mechanical stability was better than with FDM ... but the optics and haptic of SLA parts was better and was promoted as 'the new key technology for the future', so the LOM printers weren't bought anymore eye rolling smiley

My 'goal' for the next generation of 3D-printing is free selection/switching between paper, plastic, ceramic, glass and metal on the same machine .. could be even with interchanging the fabbing methodes between LOM, FFF/FDM, SLA, SLS, DLM and others ... winking smiley

Hi guys,

The quality of that kind of printer is pretty good, and they can print in full colour.
Check this out : [mcortechnologies.com]

Technicaly it's a 2D inkjet printer Colour+glue combined with a plotter cutter.

@VDX: Thank you! The Combination of all the different methods Sounds awesome. Did you already Start a project for that or do you know somone who has? Ist Sounds very complex but also like the ultimate 3D printing.

@J-Max: Mcor is Hof i found out about the paper concept and the Full Detail coloring. The Main question is if it is very Complicated to do it? They don't tell you a Price so i assume it is really high. Which leads to the assumption that it is a Complicated Piece of technology. On the contrary the technology does not Sound Too complicated. Do you know how much they cost? I would like to do something similar but i always so some background Checks on why something is done in a certain way winking smiley

Sorry for the spelling, i'm writing from a German iPad...

Hi,

I don't know the price, it is not sold in my european country.

To build one seems possibl, but as far as I know it has not been done in the DIY/Open Source world yet.

Hacking any inkjet printer is no big deal.
Just the colour slicing is to be invented,
and you need colour to pas through the paper (maybe a specific paper).
Then making a plotter is no big deal too, there's a lot of DIY examples.
Maybe the most difficult shoud be to align and glue paper sheets perfectly.
The wasted paper can make some support, but removing it can be problematic
especialy for holes and captive waste...

Big project with many things to invent by the way... Pretty interesting anyways, I will follow the topic.

... I'm tinkering with this idea since some 30+ years and did/do some of the different (single material) 3D-printing for different projects ... and preparing some of the multimaterial+multilaser SLS for next year ...

There is a guide on instructables 3D-Print-with-Paper
However for me, It would be too expensive compared to fdm. A lot of waste paper left, It would make a nice mod for a cartesian printer
each layer would have two small tabs with alignment holes on the outside perimeter, after cutting. stack on 2 rods, then break off when completed
manually it would take a long time, to do anything

I was away for a week, sorry for the delay.

Thanks to all of you!
I will keep you updated and of course i am writing this in order to push the thread to the top for some more people to see. Maybe there is someone who would also be interested in building such a machine.
