Geared Extruder Nozzle...Pictures Posted...Now on Ebay

Hello,

I just placed an order for the raw materials to start making the Geared Extruder Nozzle (http://www.reprap.org/wiki/Geared_extruder_nozzle). I should be able to have the first batch by next week and the cost will be $45.00, plus shipping and handling.

The parts kit will include the PTFE insulator, the brass nozzle, the heater block (and resistor), and the PEEK block. Due to the lack of availability of metric-sized stock, there will be some slight variations. For example, the PEEK block will be 3/8" thick as opposed to 10mm.

I'll also leave drilling the 2 mounting holes, in the PEEK block, up to the user as that will allow other sizes of threaded rod to be used.

If you are going to offer a peek block, you may as well either drill pilot holes or 3mm holes to be drilled out to fit larger sizes of threaded rod. (I can't imagine anyone wanting to go smaller than M3?)

Progress is being made. I might be able to get the first production run finished this weekend. (No promises.)

Thus far, I have the PEEK blocks ready for drilling, the heater blocks ready for drilling, and the first operation completed for the nozzles. I am planning on completing the first run of nozzles tomorrow evening.

Yes, I will ship to the UK, along with practically anywhere else where there aren't any serious restrictions.

It's good to hear that parts that I have machined are working well! I am glad that you are happy with it.

Nozzles are done!

Cancel that. I was going to thread the external threads, by hand, for the first batch and see how they sell. Unfortunately, they bend easy and I just noticed that hand-threading results in the ends being bent.

I may have another solution involving the lathe an a die head.

Next are the thermal barriers. Then, I just have to drill holes in the heater blocks and PEEK!

I am back on track to making a short production run of these nozzles. My drill press broke and created some problems so I am now drilling out the rectangular pieces on one of my lathes.

i'm interested in the complete package if i could see some photos at some stage. I was wondering what diameter are the holes of your nozzle? .5?

I'll post pictures when they are finished. The edges of the PEEK block will be a little rough (i.e. very fine grooves) as the PEEK is cut with a bandsaw. I can make the nozzle holes 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, or 1.0mm. As with the other nozzles, that I make, I'll drill the orifice as per each order. By default, I'll drill them to 0.5mm.

I just need to drill one more hole, in the heater blocks, and the 3mm holes in the PEEK. I really need to find a faster way to drill all these holes.

I too am interested in at least one of these, and possibly a few barrel tip/heater blocks separately. Given the design, it looks like it's possible to swap these parts over without really interfering with the rest of the setup, so it may be possible you could change orifice sizes without replacing the entire extruder (eg: removing the PTFE part).

How much would it be for additional nozzles and heater blocks?

I wish I had known you were going to make these before I bought one of your nozzles
I do have to say though that your machining is excellent, and so far the nozzle I bought is working great.
To everyone else, I would definitely recommend doing business with reifsnyderb.

Heater block and resistor: $10.00
Nozzle: $10.00

I just sent you a PM. These will be available real soon and I can probably ship a couple tomorrow. (One may be shipping out tomorrow.)

Right now, I have the following:

20+ PEEK blocks (still need to drill the m3 holes)

20+ heater blocks (still need to drill the heater resistor hole)

9 good nozzles (I had a total of 15; but, I botched the external m6x1 threads (bent the nozzle) on my first threading attempt. I didn't realize it until I started examining them that they were slightly bent. I changed my method of threading them and they look good.)

0 PTFE thermal barriers (I will be making a small batch today, however, I need to order more 5/8" PTFE as I need to make some 35mm standard PTFE thermal barriers as well)

I have had some setbacks and challenges: I had to figure out how to setup the rectangular pieces in order to quickly drill all the required holes. My drill press broke. The rectangular pieces require a lot more handling than the round parts. Etc.

Oh I knew that. I was meaning buying additional heating blocks and nozzles beyond just a single set. In theory, you could just swap them without having to swap the thermal barrier.

Ok, I understand. The only concern, that I have, about swapping nozzles is that if melted plastic gets in the threads the PTFE thermal barrier could break if you try to unscrew it.

Attached are the first pictures of a nozzle that ships out tomorrow. Since there are a multiple holes that need to be drilled in the two rectangular pieces, I am looking into multi-drilling solutions in order to optimize the process.

Wouldnt it be easier to just swap the nozzle and thermal barrier, unscrew the heater and retainer.

keep the nozzle and thermal barrier together .

would make sense to me. slightly more exspensive as you need a barrier for each nozzle but easy enough to swap i would think

Once the first batch is finished, I'll sell them on E-bay as there will be some delays between batches until I get all of the manufacturing problems resolved.

I'll put them up for sale other places once I figure out a fast way of making all of the parts. At the present, my shop is mainly setup to make round parts quickly. I need to come up with a way to make the rectangular parts quickly.

[1] What is the connection between the threads of the barrel and heater block like- i.e. would it benefit from some thermal compound to transfer the heat?

[2] Will you be selling the seperate parts on ebay when they are ready (this week?) or just the complete sets?

The heater block and nozzle threads are m6x1 and are reasonably tight. I am making the nozzle so that the heater block can be screwed all the way against the shoulder. But some thermal compound, on the threads, would help.

I am planning on selling complete sets, on e-bay. However, I'll be happy to sell individual parts via an e-mail.
