If Only 3D Printing was available when I was a lad.

If only Meccano had seen the potential in André Cassagnes Drawing Toy, the world might be a different place today.

How times change, old ideas with new tech, the kids of today(the ones that are on tablets) don't know how lucky they are.

I think you /we had more fun with our meccano sets and mold masters. The true joy of 3D printing is not in a hunk of plastic picked off a bed but more in the process of getting there masters of a unique society

I remember etch-a-sketch and meccano vividly. Wonderful stuff!

But is it just me or did others have to do a double take on that log saw above to make sure it wasn't an attempt at making an i3 out of meccano smiling smiley

Log saw? You mean it's not an I3? Oooooh. Meccano and lego certainly played a big part in my childhood. I was always fascinated by how strong you could make something before you ran out of parts. Some things never change. As a good friend of mine likes to say, "Make big! Make strong!".

Didnt have mold master, Play Doh squishing extruded gunk out of crazy nozzle's

Mattel sure took their time, teams with Autodesk (should have been Meccano years ago)

"Did Mattel invent the first kid-safe, consumer 3D printer way back in the 1960s? It seems unlikely, and, as we’ll see, the original ThingMaker wasn’t exactly using additive manufacturing technology as we understand it today, but at its heart, it was about encouraging kids to create 3D objects from scratch—the very essence of the now-exploding maker movement."

Discovery by Design, Imagination, Play, feeding the brain, answers to questions you didnt know you needed till you found the solutions to the problems, more rewarding than a crossword puzzle

I can't tell you how many flying cars I designed at 5 yrs old,
Then you go to School and they teach you to put away the toys and the creative mind...

R.E, History, Geography, Boring...

At school I wanted to design/invent but it wasnt exactly encouraged, even though I did metalwork & T.D (B.C) B4 Computer
I had the idea for a propelling screwdriver, teacher said it cant be done, now you can pick em up at the pound shop(though maybe not propelling).
Even in engineering college design was never really mentioned, I think they thought you would just end up taking orders in some factory.

Lego is always stronger than a bare foot!

History just keeps repeating, while I revert to childhood, but with better toys.

Can someone implement Spirographic pattern generation?

Ha No wonder he called his Meccano the Mysto Erector Set, he was a magician too

Not as flexible for design as Meccano, more like a show prop more form than funtion.

Hahahaaaa the good ol' Spirograph, like as if you actually did ever get to the end of a complex pattern without the pen or teeth slipping. It was akin to trying to pat your head while rubbing your tummy CCW at the same time smiling smiley This thread should have been called memory lane!

I guess Tonka toys and Subbuteo dont really come into the creative nurturing realm.

In trying to bring all these things together, I set out to make my printer like an expensive record deck or executive toy,
i just found a crazy example a Harmonograph (in black), a machine made with FAC, a modulair construction kit.
"Fac is used for rapid prototyping of mechanical devices in a professional environment and complies with the requirements within high engineering standards. Devices constructed with FAC are statically very stable and can be used in testing environments."
