Generation 7 Electronics is going 32-bits!

Surprise, surprise, Generation 7 Electronics made it to a new release: [reprap-diy.com]

Actually this design was mostly done 2 years ago already. At that time, interest in Gen7s dwindled from month to month, so I eventually putted it aside.

But people never entirely stopped requesting Gen7 kits. Despite me doing zero advertising, mentioning it nowhere, requests after requests came in. And recently these requests even increased. People getting sick of cheapo-chinese RAMPS?

Well, maybe. Seeing this increasing demand I decided a few months ago to pick up this stuff again. Such a wonderful robust design. Boards are single sided and can be etched, milled, be done on prototyping board. Looks like RepRap simply needs such a design. A Gen7 operated Mantis Electron can mill Gen7 boards, so it is replication.

For more details, see [forums.reprap.org].

Thank you for the great support!

Nice looking board - glad to hear the interest is still there to keep it going.

It's beautiful ! I'm making it a point to get one.

Very cool. I have been wanting to jump into the 32 bit world, and this is the perfect jump off point.
Thank Truamflug!

The picture describing all the features just became ready. Smaller board, same robustness, more features :-)

Excuse my ignorance but is this something we have to DIY or will there be a "to buy" version for the less electronically inclined among us? Or should we find a friend with soldering/ PCB etching skills and order the components?

Thanks.

I think there will be a readily soldered version before too long. There are apparently people which like such a DIY-able design, still aren't in the mood to solder thems selfs.

Add two more extruder steppers and I'd probably give you a blank check smiling bouncing smiley
Re: Generation 7 Electronics is going 32-bits!

I'll second that but one more stepper motor would be enough for me to sign in whitetongue sticking out smiley.
Seriously I find this a very elegant solution that I would dare myself to solder, provided that somebody makes the PCB smiling smiley I have no clue how to do that.

@Traumflug: is there a way you can start a crowdfounding campaign or is there a way we could order in bulk all needed components and order some entity to make the PCBs so we could have them shipped to us in reasonable time? I would be very interested in such a possibility.

Perhaps the link in the very first line of the opening post escaped you. Following this link brings up a "How to get it" and this points here: [reprap-diy.com]

Completely grinning smiley

Coming back to last two requests is there any chance there'll be a 5 stepper motor version? Or an add-on? That is the main reason I didn't go for a Duet 0.65 besides not open source. I saw on the link the Extensionboard 2E... would that work with the current board? Are you maybe able to incorporate the feature in the board design?

Second, is there any chance we can get ESP8266 to work on this board?

Again, i'm a noob at electronics, please forgive any lingo inaccuracy.

Connecting another stepper driver directly would make these two SPI connectors impossible. Or result in a considerable performance loss, if a common Dir pin is used. However, there are extension boards which connect by SPI, like this one: [forums.reprap.org]

D'oh. The Duet is no longer Open Source? A design sold by the founder of RepRap? U-oh. Maybe I'm no longer up to date with all details regarding controllers, there are so many of them.

These extension boards work with Gen7 1.5 and before, only. The ATmega based ones. I didn't clean up the wiki, yet.

A quick googling showed that these can be connected by SPI, so, yes, that's possible.

Just curious... I went out to look up the processor. It's listed as an end of life product. Did I miss something?

Obviously you (and many others) miss that a Gen7-ARm is a working controller. Like with any product, if you search long enough, you find something which isn't ideal.

Still I'm not sure where you got this "end of life" thing from. The chip is available about everywhere and listed normally on the NXPO page [www.nxp.com].

"end of life" is just a manufacturer's way of saying that they have newer designs that they feel replace an older one. End of life chips are often manufactured for many years after they are listed as such. Particularly where we want to use DIP packages for ease of construction, end of life products are often a perfectly valid (and sometimes the only) choice.

This what I saw on mouser.com [www.mouser.com]

I did not mean any disrespect. And I still plan to build one. I was just pointing out what I saw.

Figure out a way to add a 2nd extruder - could a DPDT relay be used just for the DIR signal, could that suggestion provoke a thought or eureka moment

2 extruders on this would be very good ineed.

Yes, of course! Stitching a printer kit together is boring unless you can assemble the controller, too!

Ah. So @Bobnyi doesn't check his links and also tries to hijack other threads to advertise his crap. *shrug*

Obviously, small minded people would say I am hijacking the thread.
It is not my crap! Nor I know if it does work or not! ( and sorry for the typo for the link)
I am just a guy who really want to learn about electronics as hobby and 3 D printing.

It seems that, small minded people are everywhere.

My apology to THE creator of the 32bits controller board of this thread! And wishing him all the best!

you might want to checkout what [Traumflug] has to do with this 32-bits Gen7 board before calling him a small minded person. hint : re-read his first post in this thread....

Well, then ask the creators of this other board about how it works. Compare their schematics with this one. Looking at the layouts gives an idea how DIY-able the designs are. Open a discussion (in a new thread, please) about which board might be the better one and for which purpose. Most importantly, define what "we want" means for you, because everybody has a different idea of what's ideal.

For my part I can talk about the Gen7 only, because that's board I know in detail. And I'll happily answer questions regarding it.

"We want" as 3d printer user DIYer bigginer like my self
Any way, you felt offended, new too!
It was a question, never intended for other thing.
Just saw that board and wanted to know if any difference.....,

Anyway, my last post on "YOUR" thread. :-)
