Why would anyone choose to compile when they can simply edit a text file and reboot the controller?
Because compiling and uploading is a one-click operation. Because editing text files is a 1990ies strategy.
And because a custom compiled firmware performs much better. Whatever you do not compile has to be calculated at runtime.
