Question regarding ATX PSU

Question regarding ATX PSU
April 30, 2016 07:22PM
I am currently building a tevo tarantula and want to use an extra ATX PSU I have. What would I need to do to get this to work and an I run both the electronics and heat bead using the psu? Is it possible to use the PSU without modifying it and voiding the warranty/destroying the wires?

The PSU I have is a Sentey Xplus Power Supply 725 Watt (XPP725-HS)

and I also have a couple of cable extensions

You can, but run the possibility of passing too much current through the wrong cable and damage the ATX or create an electrical fire.

If you are good at soldering you could solder all the positive cables (12 volts) and in theory current will spread evenly through the wires.

There are several tutorials online on how to do it right, just take a look at them and use the one that fit you best.

You can use ATX usually without problem. Sometimes you need a small load to get them to start.

The main thing is to spread the load between enough conductors, each wire is rated for around 6 Amps.

I respect that ATX supplies might be easy to find and even maybe free but for lots of reasons including general simplicity of connections just use a common 350W 12V adjustable SMPS like [www.ebay.com.au]
similar pricing from Amazon [www.amazon.com]
Used and sold widely in the Christmas light community as well [www.demasled.us]

In the Christmas light world we moved away from ATX style supplies years ago to the ones i've listed above.

Back to the OP's question, the Christmas lighting guys did a few ATX breakout boards so you could just plug and play but they have largely disappeared now, You really have to cut and solder wires to make best use of any ATX supply and at that point you may as well buy a 350W unit

Oh - as they are adjustable you can tweak the voltage up a little.

Cheers

If anyone wants a "no solder" solution for ATX, there are plenty of ATX breakouts around, on ebay or seeedstudio for example. [www.amazon.com]

BTW, there are wiki pages on PSUs [reprap.org].

ETA: those breakouts are useless.. 1.25A is hardly "beefy".
