... when "engraving" with carbide and graphite some ten years ago I used low DC voltages in the range of 3V to 48V but currents of up to 30 Amps, what's safe for touch -- so better avoid the potentially deadly line voltages

... depends on energy density - I'm sometimes working with pulse times down to some hundred nanoseconds and currents of up to 90 Amps, if I get the current through the wires in time 
But with manual "engraving" it's more like higher currents wil lower voltages ... the greatest problem here is to avoid "fusing" between tip and workpiece (for this is the pulsing) ...

... some +30 years ago I've done some experiments with high-voltage discharging "EDM" with 2kV and 14kV transformers - but this was even more dangerous than with line voltages.
Could be intersting to test with higher frequenzies in the hundred kHz range, to reduce the "deadly potential".
Maybe something like EDM with a Tesla-coil

dont touch the tip, wear rubber gloves & boots, sit inside a Faraday cage, dont sharpen the pencil with a metal pencil sharpner without protection

Most of the "serious" work and development was about the last 35 years for different companies, scientific projects or simply for my own interest ... some of them under NDA's, but most other not posted or blogged too for different reasons - and no active internet then
