recycling ABS after being used by a FDM machine

I am trying to design a recycling system for a fused deposition modeling machine. i am having trouble working out how the filament is made before being put on the feedback spool to be fed to the extruder. i am looking for the correct properties in which i can extrude the used abs into a filament of nominal diameter of 1.7mm, by properties i am looking for the temperature and pressure that is needed to extrude the abs, if anyone has any links or help on this it would be greatly appreciated.

... my local granules-distributor specified simething like 240°C and 400 bar for his extruders, but this are industrial grade machines.

Another point is degradation of ABS by remelting - AFAIK it looses around 30% strength after beeing remelted a second time ... normally there will be add some 'old' ABS-granules to 'fresh' ones, so the strength won't drop so much ...

thank you, is it possible to have any more information on the second part of your post on the degradation of ABS?

thanks,

Hi Will,

... found some pages with the search mask "abs remelting degradation".

The degradation is much smaller than 30% (i remembered this when solving ABS in Acetone, i'm sorry for the confusion) and depends highly on processing parameters - so most loss occures when overheating while melting or extruding.

Whereas comercial remelting is made with lower temps and much higher pressures (so they can run with much lower viscosity), our 'low pressure'-extruders will damage the plastics much more because of overheating ...

i am trying to build an extruder similar to this, anyone know where i can find some basic designs for filament extruders?
