Printing a Prusa Mendel

I'm just getting my standard Mendel working well, and I'm gearing up to start printing a Prusa Mendel set for a friend. But looking at the parts, I'm confused as to how they're actually printable. As an example:

How does that big hole for the motor not fall through? Do you need support material to print it? I've never tried printing something with support material, and have no idea how well it works. Has anyone else printed a Prusa set that can give me pointers?

Just print it, it works unless you using a stratysis/objet

Does it work better in PLA or ABS? I've been doing primarily PLA so far, and I don't have a heated bed so I'd like to stick with it for large parts if I can.

It doesn't work for me. I have to use a truncated teardrop for that hole.

That's good to know. Are there any other parts that give you problems that I should know about? You're printing in ABS, right?

Yes I print ABS except for the PLA bushings. The particular ABS I use is not good for overhangs and I use a heated bed and a chamber, which is also not good for overhangs. I use truncated teardrops for any hole bigger than 4mm.

Wade's extruder is a nightmare to print. It is all overhangs and bridges. Skienforge often gets the bridge direction wrong, which is not surprising given the geometry.

I have no issues printing Wade's extruder. I am using PLA without a heated bed though, and the PLA I'm using prints well at 175C. If you're using PLA and not running it too hot, that part shouldn't be an issue.

I get layers with a partially unsupported outline of a 9mm hole. That prints a D-shape as it is not possible to extrude a curve in mid air. The part is usable but it needs cleaning up with a penknife and looks ugly, never the same quality as the rest of the my parts.

Also the block of my Wade's extruder gets way too hot to be made from PLA.

That is a good point. I have to use a fan blowing across the thermal barrier to keep the PLA extruder block from getting warm and deforming. With the fan though I haven't had any issues.
