Survey about collaboration in Open Source Hardware projects

This just came in over the CERN Open Source Hardware mailing list:

Hi,

I want to draw your attention to the following survey from the Technische Universität Berlin.

The target group of this survey are people who are active in open source hardware development projects without any requirement on their level of involvement. The answers to this survey should allow them to better understand why some projects succeed in creating momentum and building lively projects and some others face more difficulties.

Best regards,
Erik

Open Source Hardware Collaboration Survey - how people work together to design open source products

We are part of a research project team working on open source hardware. We are launching a survey to better understand how product development in open source communities works.

In order to support our research, it would be great if you could participate in this survey and forward it within your project or community.

The questionnaire takes about 15 minutes and is available here: [opensourcedesign.cc]. It is directed at participants in open source hardware development projects of any level of involvement and runs until the 16th of November 2017.

We thank you very much in advance for your valuable support. In case of any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us via this email link.

Best regards,
Robert Mies and Jérémy Bonvoisin

PS: If you would like to learn more about our research, we welcome you to visit our wiki page[opensourcedesign.cc] or access our latest article[doi.org] in the Journal of Open Hardware.

You mean the topic "Why collaboration does not work"?

Well, looking at the RepRap universe it looks much like it doesn't. The survey makers have a list of projects, too: [opensourcedesign.cc] I looked into some of them and found about the same: hardware is published ("Open Source"), but company-owned. Contributions happen on the software side.

That said, Open Source apparently does inspire clusters of distinct projects with similar goals. For example, many one-company-designed 3D printer controllers. Putting them together, they don't collaborate (other than some of them "stealing"), still one can see kind of a collaborating community. Like collaborating by competing against each other.

Sadly there's a lot of truth in what you've stated Traumflug. Both here and in the other thread.

I think the truth is that greed is often the great corruptor of good intentions. Even those who would have released designs in open source otherwise choose not to due to fear of seeing others profit from their hard work.
