Sluggish forum.
January 25, 2018 03:53PM
Hi everybody,

Have anyone else noticed reduced speed in forum servers?

In a week or so, forum has gone very slow and sometimes I even got legendary 404 messages.

Is there growth in readers or is servers just slowing down, or is it just my connections what makes this?

Very annoying...

It's been slow for at least the last 2-3 weeks.

It is so slow, I open another browser while I wait. It won't take much of this to see me gone!

It's probably the overseas cable that causes this problems. Maybe Pentagon gets flooded with all the messages it has to filter and analyze?
I found it worst around the full hour. There seems to be massive data transfer around the world, maybe caused by all the spyware on our smartphones?

No improvement happened, who's the administrator here? In my location this is starting to be useless. I waited minutes to get here and complain....

It's been bad for a couple of weeks, maybe more. This has always been a slow forum, but lately it's been almost unusable. I click on a link, then open another browser window and go look at some other websites for a while. After that I notice that the tab text has changes, and I go back to read it. Rinse and repeat...

Hey, great place to hide that admin section. Somewhere under the library folder...

So this is all actually under one man who doesnt want to do anything to this. Im really believe that this vanish users. Its a petty cause this is a great forum.

I have spented hours to reading messages here and have learned everything i know about printing from here. Now the forum is going to be useless because server problems...

Now its working ok...

I've also noticed the slow down, but working in the IT industry I know there are behind the scenes activities that take place that people don't see. There are a lot of good hard working people making this forum happen and they often go un-thanked, personally I think they should be thanked.

It's amazing how very little people understand the complexity hosting a website and assume everything is available 24x7 and then quickly complain when there are problems.

I will say I had a heck of a time finding the admin page but they have been actively discussing server issues for some time now.

For those that like to complain and do nothing about it, shut-up or put-up and please keep your whining to yourself.

ampapa,

Is it possible that the forum is a victim of filtering - deliberate slowing of those web sites that are not seen as financially in the interests of the carriers to allow full speed. After all, it is not as though this site is as commercially important as are pornographic sites, hawkers of dubious medication, PotUS's tweets, pop-up adverts or the manifold ways in which business runs these days.

ampapa,

Did you ever looked the timestamps in the admin partition?

Actually im very grateful of this forum and the posts are great. As I said before I have been reading this months (countless) and it havent been so slow before, not so fast but usable...

I do have desire to participate to the admin things, theres only one problem, Im a mechanical engineer with a little experience in electronics designing so the software things is shooting stars to me.

I also know people who know people and think that these are not impossible things to handle. There was post that says that the money is not the problem.

Looked the server statistics and for noobi looks like theres problems with harddrives?

Edit: Why I keep writing hours as I mean months? Difficult language to write...

... could be, the forum again grows beyond the "usual" limitations - we have more than 50000 users listed, more than 12000 of them were active within the last year, 2273 within the last month, 431 in the last day.

This in combination with something like 100 thousand threads and some ten millions of posts, could result in a pretty big load balance, if not maintained properly.

The main cause for "timing problems" could be simply the caching, what has to be claned up regularly - and I don't know, who's actually doing this ... not much of contacts (or life signs) recently confused smiley

Well, the admins have done their stuff and everything's zipping along very rapidly now - many thanks to all of them!

... it seems, most of the traffic was created by bots (web-crawlers), which search/locate and subscript sites and posts for search engines. They "overloaded" the caches, what's now cleaned again and set to a smaller/simpler caching mode, so should work better/longer now ...

Couldn't you guys create an automated task on the server to clear the cache on a weekly basis so you don't have to worry about it?

... IIRC this was done with the last "breakdown" -- maybe the web-crawlers got more agressive or found another methode confused smiley
