Reporting on a new (?) bed material for printing on without a heated bed and an improvement on an old extruder design

Posted by Leav
Hello everyone,

We've made a nice discovery recently which shows promise for those without heated beds, I'd like to tell you what it's called but here is a language barrier here. I know how it's called in Hebrew (קרטון ביצוע) but not in English.

Here is a picture of it: stack of it
it's a heavy paper/cardboard made from a rough pulp, here is an interaction video with it... maybe it'll help you figure it out:
(watch in high quality to see the texture)

ABS grips it very well (better than kapton tape, rough sand paper, fine sand paper or foamcore).
It needs a raft as it sticks to the bottom of the model and tears when removing, but it is still possible to print on the same area over and over again, making this a very cheap and practical bed material.

we have not printed large objects yet but I feel confident that ABS will not detach itself from the bed due to warping.

Once we identify it i'd like to include it in the wiki: [reprap.org]

Another more minor update is a change we made to the old (old) [old] darwin extruder: [reprap.org]

we swapped out the metric bolt with a wood screw (we ground it down in the appropriate places using a dremel).
The advantage of the wood screw is that it has sharper teeth so it grips the plastic better, it also has a larger pitch so more plastic is extruded with each turn, the little motor seems up to the task so this allowed us to increase the XY feed rate by 200%-300%

it's an old extruder design but it might still be useful!

Looks like Poster Board also known as Bristol Board to me.
i can't wait to look at this on the wiki. thanks!
What's the finish like on that paper? Is it kind of rough or smooth. It almost looks like some sort of heavy card stock the wife used for scrapbooking.
How do you hold the card stock down?
Dabble:
What I know here as bristol has a smooth finish, this is more coarse and pulp-ish.

chase82:
definitely slightly rough. it reminds me of scrapbooks too! something you'd see dried leaves in maybe?

I'm uploading a video of me tearing it apart, it is made of mutiple layers and feels as if they were compacted together to form the final material.

Architecture students here use it to build models.

Andrew:
just plain old masking tape around the edges. it's holding up so well for multiple prints though that a more permanent method could be used.
Here is the 2nd video, I destroy the material here so you can see what it looks like.

Again, please view both video in high quality (720p) to see the texture

I think it might be called paperboard, does that make sense?
That texture and roughness on the edge looks like its is 200g or 250g~300g water colour paper.

Used by aritsts its made like that so it can stand large amounts of water without tearing.

It is a specialist paper and quite expensive compared to any other art paper.

Where did you buy/get it from?

we got it from the local office supply store on campus... it costs about 1.5$ for a 1.2m by 0.8 meter sheet...

maybe a cheap version of water color paper?

even if it's slightly expensive, it seems that it can be printed on multiple times due to only partial delamination of bed material when removing the model and the multiple plies inside the material
Midge my Artist partner just took a look at your videos and thinks it could be a low cost or economy form of mountboard with a water colour paper textured finish as they make a mount board with canvas texture finish too.

can you measure the thickness of it?

it's about 1.25 mm thick, and made from about 6-8 plies of thinner paper.

I have an idea: if someone would volunteer to test the material I'll send you a sample and you can get a feel for it and go to a local art or office supply store and find out it's name.

Any volunteers?
Won't the internal stresses of an ABS part warp the paper, and therefore, the part?

Heated beds do more than just help the plastic to stick to the build surface; they also relieve some of the warping stresses that build up in the FFM printing process.
