Availability of NEMA 17 Motor with 4mm shaft
August 23, 2019 05:26PM
Greetings,

Is anyone aware of a source for a NEMA 17 stepper with a 4mm flatted shaft?

I saw a post in here that was a couple years old that indicated that this configuration might exist.

I realize that it is possible to custom order but I was hoping to find something off the shelf.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Scott

Pretend the stepper motor is a lathe and turn the shaft down. One way to do this would be to secure the stepper motor to a workbench. Secure wooden platforms on either side of the shaft exactly 2mm above the shaft centerline. Run the stepper. Place a file on the shaft. Run until the file rests on both platforms (Or use calipers to determine when you've turned the shaft down to 4mm). You could also hand hold lathe tooling taking light cuts to achieve the same.

@etfrench

That is ridiculous!

Presuming you could take off any surface material at all, where do you think its going to end up?
That right it will be sucked into the stepper motor by the magnets and will f**k the motor.

DO NOT TRY THIS!

Nonsense, you can easily prevent any metal filings or dust from getting into the motor. Nema 17 motors are so inexpensive that you don't have anything to lose trying it.

BTW, why the OP needs 4mm ?
Why give an answer without having all the info about what he wants to achieve.
Besides, a guy who can't do a google search for "nema 17 4mm shaft" ????

Greetings,
We spent hours searching with Google for this configuration (before posting) with no success.
Thank you

A have several dozen old stepper motor datasheets and there is no sign of 4mm shafts even as an option on NEMA17 stepper motors. There are 4nm shafts on NEMA8 steppers and some of these have a possibly useful torque. Other steppers with 4mm shafts include pancake motors such as the Nanotech ST6318F1004-A from [uk.farnell.com]

If you gave a bit more info about your specification - such as required torque, then somebody may have useful ideas.

And "Dorian" (https://reprap.org/forum/read.php?1,265113) is not likely to answer.

Hey Mike,
Thank you for the reply.
Ideally we would like to have about 60 oz-in at 100 RPM with a supply voltage of 12 VDC. This is possible for the larger NEMA 17 motors.
We could make it work if we could get that same torque at 60 RPM or if we needed to increase the supply voltage to 24 VDC.

Thank you
Scott

One of these will help turn that 5mm shaft to 4mm [www.ebay.co.uk]?
obviously you will need some other parts, maybe you can find a solid one.

Hi Scott,

While NEMA17s with 4mm shafts seem to exist only as manufacturers surplus/over-runs, gearboxes seem to be much more available with a range of shaft sizes. First example I found was [www.amazon.com]

It should be possible to find some combination which gives the speed/torque characteristics that you want.
