Does anyone know of a way or a program to generate 3D text, just a simple extrusion a few mm high is all I'm after? no need for True Type fonts or anything fancy.

Or alternatively how about a program that can take a 2D bitmap /Jpg / DXF image and extrude it to something useful like STEP / STL ?

Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

Solidworks also does what you seek, but is sadly unaccessible to most people's budgets.

smiling bouncing smiley Thanks Sublime - I'm going to download Blender and give the tutorial a try, that output looks almost perfect if I can get Blender to play nice.

And thanks Andrew, I would really like to use Solidworks, but unless they do a 'budget' version that's sadly not going to be on the cards any time soon.:

You can do the same with Inventor. Unfortunately it suffers the same budget problem as Solidworks, but if you have a valid .edu email address you can get Inventor for free straight from Autodesk. On top of a bunch of other autodesk stuff.

Sketchup have a tool "3D text", choose the typo, extrude your text and voilà.
Maybe the easier, unless the plugin for sketchup to export in stl don't work all the time : /

There's a pretty inexpensive toolpath generator for 2.5D CAM called STLwork (www.stlwork.com) that comes bundled with another application called Accutrans. Accutrans is a format translator, but it has 3D text functions for TrueTypes built in which saves as .stl.

[wings3d.com] also does text and stl export, while still being free and open source.

I have had limited success using Solidworks, the downside with SW is to increase the text size for printing all you can do is increase the font, you can't just make the letters fatter for example so they don't print that well

I like AC3D that also have quite good 3D text features
