This popped up in my recommendations two days ago! Haha.

Owch, the kinematics of that hurt my head!

it's a vid from 2015, perhaps it should go in the right section. These YT Recommendations are a pain when you want to something off piste, stuck in a conformation bias loop, the other day I wanted something new & hit trending....sorry I did it doesnt paint a great picture of the world.

Youtube recommended it to me along with mousetrapmonday vid smiling smiley

When you read the comments of that video you also see almost everyone says 'wow, great recommendation yootoob'. I guess it's suddenly picked up by the algorithm.

Interesting thread. The dissertation of Jungnickel is interesting about serial and parralel kinematics and about somehting which is called today Compliant Machanisms. I didn't know it is known for so long back to 2004.

... hmmm ... I've seen paintings of other "scissor kinematics" in old books from 1920 or even older -- so not "totally new", but with modern manufacturing and driving methodes this is better suitable for some mechanical tasks or problematics ... especially when aiming on micro- and nano-mechanics smoking smiley

... the manufacturing of such "monolithic parallel kinematics" for small to "micro" mechanics could be easy done with the "one-off" injection moulding methode, as presented here:

[reprap.org]

So some possibilities and options, if someone is interested in "low-cost DIY-nanotech" cool smiley

Books and videos from Larry L. Howell about compliant mechanisms are interesting, especially for MEMS. I thought about using them for backlash free hinges in 3D printers. Hylite is an alternative (also a flex structure). With today's processing power one can calculate and optimize better than in the 1920s, and there are a lot of new materials.

... we designed and built micro-grippers with "solid state hinges" even from glass!! - it's pretty elastic, if the hinge thickness is below some ten microns winking smiley

Here some of my slightly bigger plastic designs with solid state hinges:

Interesting, thank you for the images. Your flexures are good for robotic grippers, I guess.

For 3D printers I thought about hinges with big possible degrees like in
[3dprint.com]
and
large stroke flexure hinge: [www.youtube.com]
or butterfly hinge: [www.youtube.com]

The calculation of the kinematics could be implemented in firmware.

... yes - especially for "micro-assembly" on chip-level, for what most of them were designed for cool smiley
