Extrusion width / line width

Extrusion width / line width

Dear all,

I'm currently experimenting with extrusion width setting and I want to reach out to the community to get their experience.

Currently using 0.48 mm extrusion width on a .4 mm nozzle and getting decent results.

The article [dyzedesign.com] recommends line width on a .4 mm nozzle with .2 mm layer height up to .6 mm. Trying this ended up with real crappy quality on my prints, killing all details and having kind of a squished look.

The built instructions of the Voron 2.4 (https://github.com/VoronDesign/Voron-2/tree/Voron2.4/Docs) recommends clamping line width to .4 mm on a .4 mm nozzle. In my experiments that ended up with bad adhesion between extrusion paths.

What are your experiences / recommendations?

.4mm nozzle prints really well with a .2mm layer height. It is recommended to not go above 80% of your nozzle width for layer height.

Also, calculate your layer height according to your steps/mm that your Z-axis can do. Sometimes 0.325mm layer height can give better results than 0.3mm because it's a multiple of the sum of steps/mm for that axis.

Here's a calculator:

@Ohmarinus
Many thanks for the reply. I already have my layer height at a multiple of the z-stepping resolution.

My question is about the layer width. I would attest both sources above quite some knowledge but they are recommending totally different thing (.4mm nozzle / .2mm layer-height):

- dyzedesign.com: layer / extrusion width .6 mm as minimum
- Voron designers: layer / extrusion width .4 mm fixed
- Typical Slicer settings: nozzle dia + 20%

So I'm searching for some experience / insight what the community is using or recommending

I'm sorry, I wasn't concentrated enough when I replied..

For the nozzle width, 0.4mm nozzle works best personally to set the extrusion width to 0.48mm
You should also measure the thickness of an extruded line in free air.

Some info on extrusion width:

To quote:
"You can use a lower layer height or larger extrusion width if you wish, it will work fine."
