Very simple multi-color 3D printing: 3D Print Colorizer

By chance I ran across this ingeniously devised system for making multi-color prints from a single-extruder printer:

It simply moves the toolhead to pick up one of several colored pens (which are all hooked onto an overhead rack in predefined positions) after each layer is printed, then runs the marker along the just-printed layer to draw a color on top of it. After coloring the layer, the tool head moves back up to the overhead rack to replace marker the marker back onto its hook, and then the toolhead finally moves back down to the print area to print the next layer. Genius!

This will result in an extreme slowdown in printing time due to all of the extra motion -- but the whole process is automated with gcode (via a Cura plugin), so you can just let it run.
