Reprap and similar, what function

Hi.
Are the reprap and similar "motherboards" just electrical interfaces/breakout boards to connect to stepper-driver boards and other I/O ? I want to use heavier duty stepper motors for an adapted CNC router, so won't be using 4988 or similar.

... essentially yes!

I've soldered some small pcb's, which feed the STEP/DIR pins from the POLOLU-socket to the inputs of a common stepper driver with "beefy" NEMA36 motors
