Google Sketchup print prep
July 17, 2011 04:22AM
Hello all,

After making a model in google sketchup and exporting it to skeinforge for Gcoding, I noticed its hollow.

Is there a setting in sketchup to make it solid? (filled inside all walls)

Thank you!

I built a model yesterday in Google Sketchup for the first time, and it Skeinforged fine despite not setting any model solidity. Check that all the faces and edges in your model coincide, there may be a small gap somewhere.

I was told the same thing in the chatroom. But the figure i created was a 3d text so I had no choice in that. It should be closed.

Do you have supports on?

I downloaded netfabb and will try to repair it and see if that works.

What is your Craft - Fill - Infill solidity (ratio) set to?
It should NOT be ZERO!
I use 0.2 unless it has to be super strong, then 0.4, 0.75 or 1.0.

Hmmm... I don't know what to tell you.

I did the following:
  1. Started Google Sketchup 8
  2. Added a 3d text "Morrison" 50 mm high
  3. Exported to STL (mm)
  4. Created GCode with Skeinforge 41

Looking at the Skeinlayer result the 3d text is definately SOLID.

Try a different font? Could be an issue with the one you are using.

Is it big enough to have room for an infill?

If a feature is between two and three times the filament width it cannot be filled as the gap left between the outlines is less than one filament wide.

that make sense.

The font size i used is 13mm arial rounded. the extrusion width of the abs plastic is .6mm. the width of the line of the letter is 1.6mm.

I guess thats cutting it close. I'll use a larger font size. Or purchase a smaller nozzle head. Whats the smallest I can buy? I know theres a limit, just don't know what that is.

Thanks so much !

I don't know what the smallest you can buy is, but 0.35mm is commonly available and should be fine enough for that. In fact, even with a 0.5mm nozzle you should be able to fill something 1.4mm wide if you use 0.3 layers and W/T of 1.5.

First check you can make a simple cube in sketchup and export it and that it is solid.

Then check the export scale that sketchup gives you, depending on what way you export you may end up with a 0.254 scaled part.

If you load the STL into netfabb or something then you can check it really is the size you think it is before slicing it in skeinforge.

You should be able to make 2mm high text with a 0.5mm nozzle.

And the font Bauhaus 93 is really good for 3D printing, it makes really nice toolpaths in skeinforge.

Hi, yes it's on my PC, I think it's from Office? it's a TTF so you may be able to download it and pop it in your fonts folder.

A few other fonts have a similar structure.

Did you manage to get a solid font output?
