Reprap mendel Running of Batteries powered but the sun. This Reprap Mendel is Running Ramps 1.3 with SD card add-on allowing it to to print without a computer plugged in. More information about the Electronics can be found @ Ultimachine.com Printing with biodegradable PLA made from Corn using only Sun power.

I know of only one other 3D printer printing with the sun & sand [www.youtube.com] , but not FDM

Sorry you're not the first [boingboing.net] it uses the sun to power the electronics through solar panels and it uses a large Fresnel lens to heat the building material (sand).

That printer is not FDM, and he mentioned that printer in his post. RTFM winking smiley

I was wondering if anyone had tried running a RepRap off of batteries and solar power. Pretty cool.

I run one off batteries on occasion, since I use XT60 connectors for power, I already had some batteries that just plugged right in. handy when I was moving things around and didn't have a good path to run a power cord to the wall.

Hence why he renamed it 3 hours after I said it. And also added the link to the sand one.

And I was not trying to lower the significance of his accomplishment but rather correct a small error. Which he corrected with elegance and poise. Now he does hold claim to a great achievement.thumbs up

The solar panel from Harbor Freight is only rated at 45W while the Mendel needs about 60-72 W of power. Technically, this is battery powered and the battery is being charged by the solar panel. I wonder if the Mendel would actually run if there was no battery in the circuit.
