Job Description
Internship Bell Labs: Distributed 3D Fabrication Tools For The Creation Of Smart Objects-11000000MP
Description
The Ambient Media department of Bell Labs, Belgium is looking for bright master students for internships in novel areas of interest. This is an excellent opportunity to work on original and significant research topics in a world leading research facility.
Research Topic: Explore And Adapt The Capabilities Of Emerging Rapid Prototyping And Distributed Fabrication Tools For The Creation Of Smart Objects
In this thesis students will need to examine the existing and emerging rapid prototyping and distributed fabrication tools. Early examples are devices like the RepRap, MakerBot, CNC and services like FabLab.
A study of the MakerBot concept, available at our labs, will be chosen as a starting point.
In the second step a design to extend this device must be made and implemented. A minimum requirement is the ability to read RFID tags on smart raw material and to automatically insert RFID tags in the finished object. This is the most basic requirement of a smart object. All build options (time, place of the build, design, material used, tool used, tool configuration) should be associated with this tag. Part of this solution can be build on existing Alcatel-Lucent RFID technology and API's. This data should enable the easy and ultimately automatic duplication of the object.
Depending on the manpower allocated to this thesis project more extensions can be added. For example: the ability to make a circuit board directly inside the object.
The objective of this thesis is to bring the creation of smart objects a step closer to the end user. It should improve the ease of use of the device and thus allow for a less steep learning curve for the operator. The increase in capabilities should occur without significant increase in cost.
Key words: Distributed manufacturing, Home fabrication, 3D-printing, MakerBot, RepRap, FabLab, Hackerspace, Fab@Home, RFID, Internet of Things (IoT).
