Z Axis ID Springs

Hi all,

Just half way through my first build (Prusa Mendel) and was wondering if anyone knows of any good sources for the Z Axis ID Springs online or in the UK?

Any links or advice would be great.

Thanks

SImon

Does anyone use springs for their Z Axis?

I've found these compression springs [uk.rs-online.com] on RS components website, as far as I can tell they fit size specs -

  • inner diameter 8mm (8mm threaded rod)
  • outer diameter 9mm (will fit in hex gap 13mm)
  • 28.5mm length (min 14.3mm)

Though not sure on the compression rate, weather too weak/strong?

Thoughts?

Hi Simon,

Yes, you should use them, it eliminates backlash and makes your layers look smoother. You can get a selection or individual springs from Maplin in the UK.
I got mine from CPC but others use Maplin.

Good luck with the build.

The RS ones are a little too long and may have quite high compression

Try this Kit from maplin - [www.maplin.co.uk]

You will get at least 8+ springs that will fit just fine.

And then you can fit some bigger ones on your heated bed, don't use the ones from BIC pens - See here

I think you only need them if you z-axis binds or you want to print in zero G.

my x-end-idler was binding a bit on the z-axis. i couldn't find any springs locally that would work, so I cut a small section of 1/2" vinyl tubing and used that instead. it works very well. i don't need it on the other side because the stepper motor is heavy enough to keep it from binding.

The springs in that maplin kit are a bit weedy, they work fine on my z axis with one small warning.

They can wrap themselves around the z axis rods. If they do you will find you are missing steps. I opened mine out a little.

Cheers,

Doug.

I found the same when I tried to fit the springs! So I slightly adjusted one end so they wouldn't push through the bottom of the plastic part.
