is gen 3 firmware working for controller board

I am new to reprap and trying to figure out what I need to build one. I am interested in using the gen 3 stepper board because it is cheaper, but my understanding is that the gen 3 firmware for the gen 3 controller is not ready. Will a gen 2 sanguino work with gen 3 stepper boards, and which firmware do I use for the sanguino? Cost is the top concern at this point.

The stepper boards are designed to be interchangeable.

The Sanguino uses a different pinout allocation for the reference design which is controlled by a define in the main program for something like the g-code interpeter with the actual mappings in a pins.h file.
