stepper exerciser calibration

Hello all,

I originally posted this in the mechanical forum but no responses so I thought I might try here.

What is supposed to happen when you calibrate in the stepper exerciser in the reprap software? When I click on the calibrate icon i receive an error message "Problem during calibration: java.io.IOException: Timeout receiving byte" The motor continues to run smashing into the MAX endstop. It does this for all three axes when I click on their respective calibrate buttons.

When I click on the home button for each axis they go to their home position or at least I think... the go to the MIN endstop. Likewise I am able to move the each axis using the sliders and adjust the speed in the stepper exerciser. It seems the only thing I am unable to do is calibrate. Is calibrating important to the function of the machine?

I am using a single arduino setup. It should also be noted that my machine is a repstrap machine so I am not sure if the distances between the endstops is correct. Does this matter or could it be affecting the calibrate function in the stepper excerciser? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

cheers!

Hi

I don't know what calibrate does either. Not all of the Host commands work with the Arduino electronics yet. I believe it has already been confirmed that the Extruder Heat Profiler does not work with the Arduino.

I have had axes moving using Arduino electronics without having ever running calibrate so I don't think it is necessary.

Yeah, calibration doesn't work for me either, but I just did a couple test moves of around 100 mm, measured with my caliper, and adjusted the XAxisScale (and Y and Z) appropriately.

After a few trials I ended up with 8.0110 steps/mm, but thinking about it, I realized that (400 steps/rev) / (20 teeth/rev * 2.5 mm/tooth) = 8 exactly, so I just used that, and it seems to be the most accurate after further testing. Z was 320, as I used metric m8 rode with a thread pitch of 1.25 mm/thread, so it's just 400/1.25=320.

I've got 400 step step motors driving 20 tooth pulleys on 2.5 mm/tooth belt; you may need to change it for your particular setup.

Cheers!

Wade
