AoI: Height Map to Solid?

I've got a greyscale image that I want to turn into a solid. I can import the image into AoI and turn it into a height map but that'll just give me a single mesh surface. What I really want is a flat-bottomed solid with the height map as the upper surface. What's the best way to do this?

My first guess is to extrude the mesh upward, then use boolean modeling to slice the bottom flat. Any thoughts?

I am not sure about the RepRap host, but certainly with Skeinforge you don't need a closed solid. It will slice a shell just fine. I expect the host is the same.

Triangles that intersect the layer generate an outline. The closed bottom of the solid at z=0 is never even sampled because the first layer is z = layer height / 2.

I was able to get the image into a height map and extrude the result into a 3D solid. I used boolean intersection with a cube to slice a flat side. The result is here:

A bit choppy but workable in principle.
