Fork for arduino firmware code?

Guys

It seems to me that development for the firmware is happening only in SanGuino land and not arduino.

Evidence to support this is that

1) SNAP does not compile with v17 of the compiler and seems to have stopped way back in v12.

2) The firmware does not seem to fit in the Arduino.

Am I wrong?

If this is case would it be worth while forking the firmware code?
one set for Arduino and one for SanGuino?

It's only going to get worse with the Arduino mega coming along.

Snap seems to be frozen. G code has many advantages.

The latest Darwin firmware has defines for Arduino and G2 electronics. However future development all points to G3 electronics which is only Sanguino.

With G2 electronics No.

With G3 electronics the Sanguino is designed in to the mother board so you have no choice. This makes sense because as the control has become refined you need the greater memory and power of the Sanguino. Clearly the lead developers also have their eye on the Mega Arduino so it may all go round the circle again and end up as a single powerful processor. Such is the nature of development. Howver it is open source and every version to date has been capable of running a machine albeit with differing levels of sophistication.

My understanding is that there are two current "forks" - the stuff from MakerBot (the "3D" firmware, in the sanguino branch), and the stuff from Bath (called the "5D" firmware). Both are under reasonably active development, and both work on the current "gen 3" electronics.

I'm not going to go into the differences, because I don't fully understand them myself yet. There was a post about it a while back.
