What kind of power supply do you need to power a makerbot reprap? I mean, I know an ATX PSU with a 12V output (24pin) is ideal, but how many watts does it need to be? Could we power things with, a laptop battery charger, for example, instead?

For Mendel you only need 12V DC @ about 5A

Cupcake will not use any more than 12V at 5A

If there was ever a heated Bed fitted you would need more.

laptop chargers are usually 19v, 5A or so. you would have to check the voltage ratings on capacitors and things, and make sure your stepper current choppers were working nicely

what are other people using, i was starting to toy with the idea of a small atx psu but i would prefer something that was simpler over all and not overkill. though i think they would offer the best power for the dollar too.

the link above will take you to the wikipedia for atx supplies. at the bottom of that page is the pin out of atx supply, you can see how to wire a laptop brick to a connector for 24pin atx and save money for the supply. you can find cheap power bricks on ebay for less that 12$ and can get atx connector for less that 2$ cut it solder it and presto!

Once I remove the PSU from Berth CNC its an old 20-24V Pl-20 PSU from a PLC I was given. Bertha CNC is having its 13A 30V supply fitted instead.

I would have thought that almost every one will have an old PC they could take the Power supply out of. You do not need to have an ATX an AT PSU will do the ATX 250W PSUs are as cheap as chips here £9 - £12 ~ in the USA they must be lees than this.
Over here the Laptop bricks are more expensive than the lower power ATX supplies.

Most of us in the UK have looked with envy at the USA - PC parts prices.

If you pay $10 in USA we pay £10 + a bit like another 10-20% more in the UK.

Or is it now in the USA you can only buy 450W + ATX psu's?

We can still buy 80W-100W ATX for the micro ATX motherboards.

I have an Atom Micro ATX computer that is controlling the Bertha CNC machine.

AT PSU's are hard has hell to get here now, though what i might do is try to find some smaller PC's and get there power supply out of them, they tend not to be any more powerful than 250 W

350 is about the lowest i seem to find new any how, though i am sure smaller ones are out there too. if you go looking.

i have a friend in Portsmouth that has a computer shop.

Where are you UK or USA or ??

I'm using 250W PSUs on all of my Repstraps they are all from old PC cases.

The only Repstrap Mendel will be different with a 20-24V supply.

For UK brand New inc delivery & VAt 400W ATX £12.99.

That's without looking at places like EBay

Or

suppliers at local monthly computer shows have low cost New supplies

And even lower cost second hand supplies cables & other bits and bobs.

I know what you mean Midge and I Were both made redundant from Sony Ericsson last March.

That is why I am re-using every thing and any thing.

As it appears we are both too old to be considered even for interviews.

I have several relations around BC Vancouver / White rock area and some up north.

We have outstanding invites to go visit ~ may be when I come up with the next must have Killer Gadget/toy/Application idea I will.
