Just a follow-up. After asking a hundred questions in multiple irc chat rooms I found that my problems were with the firmware. I missed a link at the bottom of the shield page on Ultimachine. The shield is currently only working with the firmware found
here and with
Repsnapper software. I was trying to use the standard Reprap software and the standard Mendel firmware that comes with the software which is not currently working with the shield. BTW,...I kind of like the Repsnapper software more than the Reprap software (the reprap software has been kind of buggy on my Ubuntu setup).
So,...the shield is working like a charm. Now I just need to get the printed parts to start assembling the Mendel (and deal with those problems). woot!
